Welcome to my site, over the years I have been fortunate to be deeply involved
in motor sports competition, frankly speaking, it is my life. As a result I have traveled
the World, met dynamic, interesting people and spent many enjoyable hours
riding and racing motorcycles in some the most difficult and dangerous
conditions on the planet. I have made motor sports my career, in the past I have worked
for Yamaha, Honda and Kawasaki. Presently I call magazine journalist and writer my job.
Recently I have branched out into four wheel racing, my brother Mark and I
have competed in the five-day Targa Newfoundland car rally three times in
factory-supported Mitsubishis twice and a Subaru once. We finished on the
podium for our division each time winning in 2005. In November 2007 I co-drove
the Baja 1000 as part of a top-shelf Protruck team. We finished 6th in class
and went on to finish 6th again at the Parker 425 in February 2008. But I am
getting ahead of myself, I first raced in July 1971 on a Hodaka 100cc Super
Rat, even though I broke the bike I was hooked. Since then I have competed
every year to some degree, racing has taken me as far as the International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) which I rode six times in three different decades. I finished each Six Days earning either Silver or Bronze FIM medals.
When you are passionate about something your life is enhanced by that passion.
I have ridden in many exotic countries including Mexico, Australia,
Czech Republic, before that Czechoslovakia, plus places such as Sweden, Egypt and India.
Motorcycling has taken me all over Europe, many African
countries, Mongolia twice and most recently, I rode a 7-day rally on the Island
of Shikoku, Japan. Sometimes I have to pinch myself to make sure this isn’t a
dream.
I have had the pleasure of getting to know and riding with National and World
Champions. In 2005 I co-drove the Black Bear Rally with one of North America’s best performance
rally drivers (thanks for the win Andrew). You will find that story under Racing Four Wheels, look for the Toronto Star Wheels July 2005.
Over the years I have met some of the best off-road racers in the World. I call Guiness Book of World Records inductee, Yoshi Sugawara, my friend. Sugawara-san holds the
record for the greatest number of Dakar Rally participations at 25.
To top it all off in 2001 I became the first Canadian to complete the notorious Paris Dakar Rally aboard a modified Honda XR 650R and went on to write a book about the adventure called “To Dakar and Back”. You can order my book, click on books for more information.
I truly believe you have to give a lot to get a lot. I try to put back as much
as I can back into the sport that has been so good to me. In 2006 and 2007 a group of my friends and I organized rounds of the World Enduro Championships
in Parry Sound, Ontario. It was the first time the WEC has left the European
continent. Both events were a huge success, the team we created derived a lot
of satisfaction from the accomplishment and we are currently working on other
similar projects under an organization called World Enduro Canada.
I could go on forever but I won’t. To explain briefly, under Racing you will find magazine and newspaper articles I have written about motorcycles and car racing (in PDF files). Under Media you’ll find articles covering my racing activities on both Two and Four
wheels. The photo pages reflect work I have done as a magazine test rider for
Cycle Canada and Moto Journal plus there are some great shots of
Mongolia and photos of the Targa and Dakar rallys.
Motorcycles can take you anywhere you can dream!
I hope you enjoy my site. Lawrence May 2008
